SUP Board Care & Maintenance Guide: Keep Your Paddle Board in Top Shape

SUP Board Care & Maintenance Guide: Keep Your Paddle Board in Top Shape

Introduction

Your inflatable SUP board is built to last — but only if you take care of it. Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your board but also keeps you safe on the water. Follow this guide to keep your board performing like new, season after season.

1. Rinse After Every Use

Always rinse your board with fresh water after each session, especially after paddling in saltwater. Salt, sand, and debris can degrade the PVC material and damage the valve over time. A quick rinse takes less than a minute and makes a big difference.

2. Dry Before Storing

Never store your board wet or damp. Moisture trapped inside the bag can lead to mold and mildew, which weakens the material and creates unpleasant odors. After rinsing, lay the board flat in a shaded area and allow it to air dry completely before rolling it up.

3. Deflate Properly for Storage

When storing for more than a few days:

  • Deflate the board fully by pressing the valve pin down and letting the air escape
  • Roll the board loosely from the tail to the nose — avoid tight rolling which stresses the seams
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme heat

Tip: If you use your board frequently, you can store it partially inflated (around 5–8 PSI) to reduce stress on the seams from repeated rolling.

4. Protect from UV & Heat

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and high temperatures can cause the PVC to degrade and colors to fade. When not in use on the beach, flip the board over or use a board bag for UV protection. Never leave a fully inflated board in a hot car — the air inside expands and can damage the seams.

5. Inspect Your Board Regularly

Before each session, do a quick visual check:

  • ✅ Check the valve — make sure it's tight and not leaking
  • ✅ Inspect seams for any signs of separation or bubbling
  • ✅ Look for any punctures or abrasions on the deck and hull
  • ✅ Check the fin box and fin attachment

6. How to Repair a Puncture

Small punctures are easy to fix with the repair kit included with your board:

  1. Deflate the board completely
  2. Locate the puncture (use soapy water — bubbles will appear at the leak)
  3. Clean and dry the area thoroughly
  4. Apply PVC glue to both the patch and the board surface
  5. Wait 2–3 minutes, then press the patch firmly and hold for 60 seconds
  6. Allow to cure for 24 hours before re-inflating

7. Valve Maintenance

The valve is one of the most critical components. Keep it clean and free of sand or debris. Use a valve wrench (included in most kits) to tighten it periodically. If you notice slow leaks around the valve, it may need to be replaced — contact us for spare parts.

Conclusion

A little care goes a long way. By following these simple maintenance steps, your inflatable SUP board will stay in excellent condition for years of adventures on the water. Have questions about your board? Our team is always here to help!
