Why the iTAOSTAR Journey 11'×35" Is the Best Beginner SUP You'll Ever Need

Getting on a stand-up paddle board for the first time is exciting — but it can also feel a little wobbly! Don't worry. With the right technique and mindset, you'll be gliding across the water in no time. Here are our top 5 tips to help beginners get started with confidence.

Tip 1: Start on Calm, Flat Water

Avoid rivers, surf, or choppy open water on your first few sessions. A calm lake, bay, or sheltered cove gives you the best environment to find your balance and build confidence without fighting currents or waves.

Tip 2: Master the Kneeling Position First

Before standing up, spend a few minutes paddling on your knees. This lowers your center of gravity, helps you get a feel for the board's movement, and builds your confidence before you attempt to stand.

Tip 3: Stand Up Correctly

When you're ready to stand, follow these steps:

  1. Place your hands flat on the board and push up to a crouching position
  2. Bring one foot up at a time, placing them where your knees were
  3. Keep your feet parallel, hip-width apart, and centered on the board
  4. Bend your knees slightly and keep your gaze on the horizon — not at your feet!

Tip 4: Use Proper Paddle Technique

Hold the paddle with one hand on the T-grip and the other on the shaft. The blade should angle away from you when paddling. Engage your core — not just your arms — for efficient, powerful strokes. Switch sides every few strokes to paddle in a straight line.

Tip 5: Always Wear a Leash (and a PFD)

A leash keeps your board attached to you if you fall — and you will fall, and that's totally fine! In open water or anywhere with boat traffic, a personal flotation device (PFD) is also strongly recommended. Safety first, always.

Bonus Tip: Falling Is Part of the Fun

Everyone falls when they start. Try to fall away from the board (not onto it), and practice getting back on from the water. Once you're comfortable with falling and remounting, you'll feel much more relaxed on the board.
